The Ministry of External Affairs on Friday urged mutual respect in diplomatic discussions following comments by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sandeep Dikshit referencing Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy approach.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that India’s relations with Italy have grown and strengthened across multiple areas in recent years. He emphasized that both nations should maintain respect for each other as part of standard diplomatic practice.
Jaiswal stated that ties with Italy have expanded in every aspect and that strengthening the relationship requires ongoing mutual understanding between the two sides.
The remarks followed Gandhi’s criticism at a party convention in New Delhi, where he questioned the notion that foreign policy centers on personal rapport with foreign leaders and illustrated his point by embracing Dikshit onstage.
Dikshit then referenced Meloni in a remark directed at Gandhi, who responded that he had not reached that stage. The exchange alluded to Meloni’s ongoing diplomatic engagement with India.
Jaiswal focused on the positive development of bilateral ties rather than addressing the political comments directly. He reiterated the importance of respect and understanding in advancing the relationship.
The BJP has condemned Gandhi’s statements, accusing him of exceeding acceptable political boundaries. The controversy has prompted the MEA to highlight the value of India-Italy cooperation and the need for diplomatic courtesy.
