The death of a 35-year-old remand prisoner at Nagercoil sub-jail in Tamil Nadu’s Kanniyakumari district has turned into a custodial death investigation. Three prison staff were arrested after a post-mortem reportedly showed multiple injuries. Sabari Varman, a differently abled shop owner detained on July 9 for alleged possession of banned gutka items, died after officials said he suffered a medical emergency. His family claimed he was beaten in custody and declined to accept the body. Police arrested the chief warder and two others, alleging one carried out the assault while the others tried to hide evidence. Five inmates have also been identified as possible participants.
