Indian Railways has tested the nation’s first hydrogen-powered train on the Delhi-Jind route. Earlier trials took place between Sonipat and Jind in Haryana. Friday’s run examined emergency braking distance and oscillation to check safety and performance before commercial service begins.
Once in operation, India will join a small group of countries including Germany, Sweden, Japan and China that run hydrogen trains.
Last month the Railway Board approved the first hydrogen trainset. A May 22, 2026 letter to RDSO and Northern Railway confirmed approval for a 10-car set. The train will reach a top speed of 75 kmph on the Jind-Sonipat section of the Delhi Division.
