Four years ago, a philatelist from Kozhikode followed the World Cup final between Argentina and France in Qatar. While many recall Lionel Messi leading Argentina to victory in the penalty shootout, the collector’s own connection to the event involved a lengthy wait. It took three years to obtain the Argentine commemorative stamp issued by that country’s postal service.

Upon receiving it, he described a sense of satisfaction similar to the one felt by millions of fans after the win. He noted that delays can become part of a stamp’s story and that persistence adds value to the item. The collector said he now owns stamps from every World Cup since 1930.

Over three decades, he has assembled nearly 500 commemorative stamps documenting FIFA World Cup history. The albums also include issues honoring notable players, host countries, and key tournament moments, creating a visual record of the event’s development.

He explained that each stamp captures a moment in football history and that collecting them preserves tournament memories. Acquiring many items required patience, with some rare stamps obtained through international collectors and others delayed by limited availability. The 2022 Argentine issue proved especially difficult to secure and remains one of the most valued pieces.

Beyond football, the stamps have led him to study the history, culture, and geography of issuing nations. He maintains a separate collection focused on countries and their heritage, viewing philately as both an educational activity and a personal interest.

The World Cup stamps hold a prominent place in his albums. With the knockout stage ongoing, he continues to add items to document new developments.
