The Maharashtra government has proposed changes to regulations requiring cab drivers to possess practical knowledge of the Marathi language. Non-compliance could result in suspension or revocation of driving licences, officials stated.

State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced on Wednesday that the August 15 deadline for autorickshaw and taxi drivers to learn Marathi will not be extended, according to PTI.

The draft amendments to the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, stipulate that drivers of motor cabs with electronic meters must have working knowledge of Marathi. The notification notes this is needed to communicate with passengers and ensure safe travel.

If a driver is found lacking, the licensing authority will issue a one-month notice to acquire the skill. The rules cover autorickshaw, taxi and app-based cab drivers and permit holders.

Failure to comply may lead to suspension of authorisation for up to three months, followed by revocation if non-compliance continues. Drivers will receive an opportunity to be heard before revocation. The requirement also applies to permit renewals.

The draft notification has been cleared by the law and judiciary department and awaits final issuance by the home department. Sarnaik reiterated that Marathi is the language of Maharashtra and basic proficiency is essential for public transport drivers.
