Jammu and Kashmir’s former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti is traveling to Tehran to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israel airstrike on February 28. Mufti received an invitation from the office of Mujtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father as the new Supreme Leader. She is the only non-Shia political leader from Jammu and Kashmir attending the event. The invitation carries weight because Mufti expressed support for Iran during the conflict, in contrast to the central government’s neutral position.
