Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge exchanged sharp remarks in Parliament on Wednesday. Nadda said students who take part in activism should expect police intervention. He supported the authorities’ actions by noting his own detentions from class as a student activist during the Emergency period.

Nadda replied to Kharge’s statements that democracy and citizens face risks under the present government and that those behind forceful measures against student demonstrators have not been held responsible. The minister argued that police took necessary steps to restore order.

Opposition parties have called on the government and Home Minister Amit Shah to explain the reported use of force on July 20 and to seek an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The disagreement began after a Delhi Police team entered the CPI(M) headquarters to detain a student leader linked to a Jantar Mantar protest. Similar demands for accountability were raised in both houses. Some opposition figures compared the events to the Emergency period. This remains a developing story.
