Parents of a nine-year-old girl who died by suicide at Neerja Modi School in Jaipur last year have shared fresh CCTV footage from her classroom. The father stated that his daughter appeared visibly distressed in the recording.
The student allegedly took her life on November 1 after jumping from the fourth floor. She had reportedly faced bullying from classmates, and her complaints to the class teacher went unaddressed.
According to the parents, the footage shows repeated bullying by peers. The girl approached the teacher several times without any resolution before leaving the classroom, climbing the stairs, and jumping.
Her father, Vijay Meena, described the chargesheet as incomplete. He noted that the video demonstrates her distress and repeated attempts to seek help, yet no protection or counselling was provided. Police filed the chargesheet after eight months, naming school owner Saurabh Modi, principal Indu Dubey, and teacher Puneeta Sharma under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for negligence and evidence tampering. The teacher also faces charges under the Juvenile Justice Act for cruelty to a child.
The family demands additional charges of abetment to suicide against the teacher and Juvenile Justice Act violations against the owner and principal. They also oppose further changes to investigating officers.
A CBSE fact-finding panel had earlier reviewed similar footage and concluded that the school failed to act adequately. It described the incident as preventable and noted that the school cleared blood from the site shortly after the fall, compromising evidence. The board withdrew the school’s senior secondary affiliation but later faced a high court stay. An parents’ group has raised concerns over unqualified teachers at the institution.
