Parliament is scheduled to resume on Monday following a week of interruptions related to the NEET paper leak and police actions during protests on July 20 at Jantar Mantar. Union Minister Jitendra Singh plans to present The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. The legislation raises penalties for those involved in leaking government exam papers, extending imprisonment from three to five years to five to 10 years and increasing fines from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. It also strengthens measures against organized unfair practices in public exams, raising minimum imprisonment from five to seven years and fines from Rs 1 crore to Rs 10 crore. A Special Task Force will handle investigations with a two-month deadline. The Cabinet approved the draft on Friday before sharing it with members. Opposition parties have filed notices seeking discussions on the NEET issue, police conduct at the protests, and the creation of a new anti-defection law. DMK MP Tiruchi Siva submitted a notice to address student concerns and call for ending the NEET exam. CPI MP Sandosh Kumar requested an independent inquiry into police actions against student protesters. Congress MPs Manickam Tagore and Manish Tewari also submitted motions on police force and political defections.
