Tensions rose in West Bengal’s Halishahar on Saturday when protesters confronted the convoy of former Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee. She was traveling to meet the family of party worker Birju Keot, who died while in police custody, sparking political controversy.

Reports indicate that demonstrators surrounded her vehicle, smeared mud on it, and threw water bottles along with shoes and other items at the convoy. They also chanted slogans labeling her a thief and the queen of dacoits, turning the scene disorderly.

The demonstration stemmed from Keot’s death, with his family claiming he was beaten in custody. This has fueled public outrage and further protests in the region. Banerjee was heading to Halishahar to visit the family but faced a blockade before arriving, resulting in a short standoff.

Police quickly arrived to manage the situation and escorted the convoy away for safety. Banerjee later stated that stones were thrown at her car in front of officers and accused police of shielding the BJP. She noted the attack could have been fatal if windows were open.

BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya condemned the violence and denied party involvement, calling for action against those responsible. State minister Agnimitra Paul also denounced the acts, emphasizing they do not align with BJP values and should not be linked to the party.

Keot had been detained on corruption and extortion charges before his health declined in custody, leading to his death in hospital. Police attributed it to a heart attack, but his wife alleged torture, prompting calls for an independent inquiry. The event has heightened political tensions between TMC and BJP in the state.
