Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray criticized actors and industrialists for living in Dubai while publicly praising India’s progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
At an event held by the party’s student wing in Mumbai, Thackeray referred to Bollywood actors Vivek Oberoi and R Madhavan, both of whom have voiced support for Modi in the past. He questioned their choice to relocate abroad.
Thackeray noted that Oberoi, who appeared in a 2019 film about Modi, now resides in Dubai. He added that Madhavan, another supporter of the prime minister, also lives there.
The leader asked why those who claim to admire India and Modi would choose to live overseas if the country is advancing under his leadership.
He further alleged that some actors take part in government-backed films before returning abroad.
Madhavan has said his relocation during the pandemic was to support his son’s swimming career, while Oberoi cited business expansion as the reason.
Thackeray also urged Modi to instruct members of the Bharatiya Janata Party against using insulting language toward opponents.
This came after Modi spoke about facing abusive remarks during protests in Delhi over alleged NEET irregularities.
Thackeray agreed such language should be avoided but said the advice should apply to the ruling party’s supporters, who have targeted historical figures and political families.
He also asked when those responsible for police action against students during the protests would apologize, noting the demonstrations reflected wider youth concerns over the years.
