The redevelopment of Rajasthan’s 151-year-old Gandhinagar Jaipur railway station is approaching completion under Indian Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The scheme, started in 2022, focuses on upgrading stations across the network through long-term master plans that improve multimodal links and passenger access.
Opened on metre gauge in October 1874 and converted to broad gauge in 1994, the station lies in Jaipur’s Bajaj Nagar area on the busy Delhi-Jaipur-Ajmer route. It belongs to the Jaipur Division of North Western Railway and handles over 82 daily trains with more than 14,000 passengers.
It is India’s first non-suburban station run entirely by women staff. The project, costing about 211 crore rupees, has reached its finishing stage. Both main and second entrances are complete, along with a 72-metre-wide air concourse. Two new G+2 station buildings have been built, covering 4,516 and 3,029 square metres.
The concourse spans 2,700 square metres and will include waiting areas, shops, a cafeteria and a gaming zone, with 2,200 square metres reserved for commercial use. Eight lifts, four escalators and facilities for persons with disabilities are being installed. Platform shelters covering around 6,000 square metres are also under construction. Green features such as a 1,376 kWp solar plant, waste management and rainwater harvesting have been added.
