The Supreme Court on Wednesday urged law enforcement to avoid forceful tactics when managing student demonstrations. It warned that state power used aggressively could heighten tensions and spark additional unrest.

The court consented to examine a request for measures against organizers of the July 20 Cockroach Janta Party protest in Delhi. The matter was combined with other pending cases on recent student actions in the capital.

Justices noted that security forces should show restraint amid peaceful marches in a democracy. They stressed the need for careful engagement with young people to avoid escalation into violence.

The petition called for penalties against protest organizers and proposed community service for participants who used offensive language. The Chief Justice observed that even misguided actions like stone throwing should prompt dialogue to understand underlying concerns.

Violent responses would only worsen matters, with listening identified as the most effective tool. The bench recommended guidance and counseling for youthful protesters rather than confrontation. Any aggression from authorities in the name of state authority risks unnecessary escalation and further clashes.

Handling of such events should ultimately be decided by experienced law enforcement agencies. The July 20 Delhi protest focused on alleged NEET exam irregularities and contributed to the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
