Crop losses from wild boars have become a serious issue for farmers across Tamil Nadu. Agriculture Minister R. Vinoth announced a ₹7.35 crore package in the Agriculture Budget 2026-27 to limit financial damage and safeguard fields.
While presenting the budget in the Assembly on August 6, 2026, the Minister stated that an eco-friendly liquid repellent created by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University would be made available to farmers at reduced prices. The program targets 14,000 acres and carries a cost of ₹1.35 crore, fully supported by state funds.
The Minister referenced verses from the Sangam text Malaipadukadam to show how earlier societies defended their harvests using stone traps known as adar along animal paths.
To cut losses from wild boars as well as elephants, gaurs and deer, the government will provide subsidized solar-powered electric fencing to 134 farmers this year, backed by a ₹2 crore allocation.
The Minister added that dense stands of Prosopis juliflora, or Seemai Karuvelam, serve as shelter for wild boars in many districts. The state will clear the invasive plant from both public and private land through district collectors, with ₹4 crore set aside for the effort.
