The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited will speed up the shift to electric cooking in restaurants, hotels and industrial canteens. Following a central government request to states and union territories, the utility directed its distribution companies to give priority to applications for new connections or increased load for e-cooking, officials said. The Director of Distribution instructed regional chief engineers to process these requests quickly, upgrade infrastructure as needed and offer a simple online application system. The move comes amid rising demand for LPG linked to tensions in the Gulf. Officials noted that the effort to move away from LPG began earlier and aims to ensure timely approvals. Although supplies of domestic and commercial LPG remain adequate, some reports suggest artificial shortages in commercial cylinders have raised costs for restaurants. The Chairman of Tangedco described the initiative as an opportunity for businesses to adopt cleaner energy, noting that many establishments have already made the change.
