A major infrastructure project to improve the Char Dham pilgrimage route is nearing completion in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. A 900-metre tunnel linking the Badrinath and Kedarnath highways has been finished.
The project connects the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway with the Kedarnath National Highway and includes a 200-metre double-lane motor bridge over the Alaknanda River. Bridge construction is in its final stage, with vehicle trials expected to start on August 31.
Officials stated that successful trials would allow the third phase of the Char Dham Yatra to use the new tunnel and bridge, offering a smoother path for pilgrims and residents.
The tunnel and bridge should ease travel for those heading to Badrinath and Kedarnath. The current Badrinath Highway through Rudraprayag market is narrow and often causes traffic jams. The new route will let pilgrims avoid the congested area via the Jawari bypass and proceed directly to the pilgrimage sites.
The project aims to cut travel time, reduce congestion, and improve safety and organisation for the Char Dham Yatra.
Rudraprayag District Magistrate Vishal Mishra said bridge work should finish by August 31. Testing and trials will then assess quality, safety, and technical standards.
He added that the project will strengthen arrangements for the Char Dham Yatra and benefit thousands of devotees visiting Badrinath and Kedarnath each year.
