The political climate in West Bengal features a blend of quietude and underlying dissatisfaction. In an interview with a senior assistant editor, Rajya Sabha member and West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya offered a pointed assessment of the governing Trinamool Congress, describing the upcoming polls as a critical battle for the region’s future.

Addressing the apparent voter silence compared to the 2021 elections, Bhattacharya argued that it stems not from fear but from widespread resentment. He claimed residents are determined to reject the TMC, warning that the state faces ruin and demographic shifts.

He portrayed the contest as essential for preserving West Bengal’s identity, preventing it from resembling a neighboring area. On economic matters, he highlighted discontent among business owners and workers, noting the state’s natural advantages like rivers, ports, and skilled workforce, yet a lack of investment due to an unwelcoming environment.

Bhattacharya cited past incidents in Singur and Nandigram as deterrents to investors, accusing TMC policies of harming farmers, laborers, unorganized sectors, and industry. Responding to a TMC leader’s comment that Bengal was never an industrial center, he countered that the state historically attracted workers from other regions, but now experiences an outflow of talent and capital.

He pointed to data showing over 1.4 million qualified Bengalis employed in Bengaluru, blaming TMC for systemic failures and predicting a desire for change.

Discussing welfare programs, Bhattacharya noted the BJP’s Annapurna scheme as an enhancement to TMC’s Lakshmir Bhandar initiative, emphasizing the need for increased aid amid law and order breakdowns and constitutional challenges under the current administration.

He stressed that BJP represents progress and unity, contrasting it with TMC’s alleged divisiveness. Bhattacharya raised concerns about border demographics, infiltration, and internal security threats, including unauthorized voter inclusions.

He criticized stalled central projects due to land issues and highlighted corruption scandals during the TMC’s rule, suggesting public awareness persists despite attempts to downplay them.
