Bengaluru authorities are dealing with a growing political controversy centered on a sting operation that has drawn attention to possible internal divisions within the ruling Congress party in Karnataka. The episode has prompted accusations from opposition groups that the state government may have allowed the situation to affect the standing of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. At the same time, comments from his son, Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah, have introduced new elements to the discussion by pointing toward possible involvement by individuals connected to the party itself.

The matter gained momentum after reports indicated that the Chief Minister informed a cabinet session about an attempt to ensnare him in a similar manner. Siddaramaiah later sought judicial intervention and secured an order limiting media reporting on certain aspects of the case. Earlier statements from the ruling party had attributed the operation to a central government minister and a state-level BJP figure. Yathindra’s recent observations, however, have redirected focus toward the possibility of involvement from within Congress ranks.

In remarks delivered in Mysuru, Yathindra stated that party members participated in the operation, which he described as an effort to harm his father’s public image and apply pressure through blackmail. He referenced a woman linked to the party and suggested the action was connected to ambitions for securing a nomination from the Puttur constituency. Yathindra noted that Siddaramaiah had maintained a lengthy political career spanning roughly four decades without facing comparable claims and expressed that the developments had caused significant distress. He added that the full circumstances would become clear over time.

These statements have reinforced arguments from opposition parties that the controversy may originate inside the Congress rather than solely from external sources. Investigations have not yet confirmed the claims, and the identities of those responsible along with their specific intentions continue to require further clarification. The situation has placed party leadership in a position where it must address how it would handle any confirmed participation by its own members.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B.K. Hariprasad responded by indicating that disciplinary measures would follow if evidence confirmed involvement of party figures. He emphasized the need for show-cause notices in such cases and stressed that accusations alone do not constitute grounds for action without supporting proof. Hariprasad characterized the operation as an unacceptable form of political retaliation and noted that multiple agencies could review the matter. He also acknowledged that Siddaramaiah might encounter political difficulties and that the party would address them through established political channels.

Home Minister Priyank Kharge stated that the inquiry is advancing in a transparent manner and that investigators have gathered several leads. He suggested the process could conclude relatively soon, allowing identification of those behind the operation, their objectives, any individuals who may have encouraged it, and the person who uploaded related video material. Kharge ruled out participation by Congress members of Parliament or the legislative assembly but left open the possibility that certain leaders played a role. He maintained that the episode was driven by political motives aimed at damaging the reputations of both Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Kharge further indicated that individuals seeking positions such as legislators, legislative council members, or heads of government boards and corporations might have had ambitions tied to the events. He noted that Siddaramaiah had assigned him responsibility for overseeing a fair investigation and cautioned against treating unverified allegations as established facts.

The range of statements has created a complex environment for the ruling party. Yathindra’s references to possible insider involvement, Hariprasad’s comments on potential action against members, and Kharge’s emphasis on external political motivation have made the inquiry particularly delicate. Opposition figures, including Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, have called for accountability and a thorough examination of all angles without interference. The JD(S) has advocated for broader investigative steps.

Siddaramaiah has consistently described the material associated with the sting as fabricated and intended to defame and blackmail him. He has pursued legal safeguards against its distribution and urged identification of those responsible. The claims contained in the material remain contested, and conclusive determinations about its creation, circulation, and purpose are still pending. The episode continues to highlight tensions within Karnataka politics while the investigation proceeds.
