Bengaluru authorities have initiated an official inquiry following the partial collapse of a classroom roof at a government school in Mugulolli Tanda village located in Bagalkot taluk. The incident occurred on September 2 during regular class hours resulting in injuries to eight students. All affected children received medical attention at the district hospital and were later released after treatment. The Karnataka Lokayukta took suo motu notice of the event based on media coverage and began proceedings on September 3 under Justice B.S. Patil. Notices were sent to multiple senior officials including the Additional Chief Secretary of the School Education and Literacy Department along with the Commissioner and Additional Commissioner. Additional notices reached the Bagalkot Deputy Commissioner the Chief Executive Officer of the Bagalkot Zilla Panchayat the Deputy Director of Public Instruction and the relevant Block Education Officer. These officials have been instructed to appear personally before the Lokayukta by October 7 and provide a detailed report explaining the causes of the collapse as well as actions taken afterward. The Lokayukta police received orders to perform a comprehensive safety audit of all government schools in Bagalkot district. This review will examine building structures adherence to safety norms and presence of essential facilities. A full report on findings is expected after completion of the inspection process. In response to the event departmental measures were implemented against staff responsible for building maintenance and certification. The in-charge head teacher at the affected school was suspended under relevant civil service rules for alleged failure to report ongoing repairs or implement necessary precautions. Two engineers from the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department also faced suspension for issues related to prior fitness certification of the structure. Show-cause notices were issued to additional officers seeking their explanations regarding oversight responsibilities. Immediate steps announced by the district administration include relocating students from classes four through six to a nearby Karnataka Public School approximately one and a half kilometers away with transportation costs covered by the education department. Younger students in classes one to three will continue using classrooms deemed safe at the original location. Plans call for construction of four new classrooms at the site with two funded through the education department and two under a rural development scheme. A broader structural evaluation covering all nine thousand four hundred forty-nine classrooms across the district has been ordered and is scheduled for completion within one month. This assessment will involve multiple engineering departments and independent third-party verification. An emergency coordination meeting took place on September 3 with representatives from public works rural engineering water supply and block education offices to discuss campus safety drinking water access and classroom conditions. Separate instructions were given to the local electricity supply company to promptly address high-tension lines near school premises. The district administration emphasized prioritizing student welfare throughout these efforts. Earlier assessments had flagged six hundred twenty-eight buildings in the district as unsuitable yet the Mugulolli Tanda school was not among them raising questions about inspection thoroughness. The Lokayukta action aims to ensure accountability and prevent similar occurrences through systematic reviews and corrective measures across the region.
