Astronomers are tracking a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage expected to strike the moon on August 5 at 12:05 pm IST. The stage, left in an unstable orbit after launching two satellites in January 2025, lacked sufficient fuel for a return or deep-space trajectory. Calculations by independent astronomer Bill Gray indicate impact near the Einstein Crater. Initial uncertainty allowed for possible close lunar flyby, but additional data by January 2026 confirmed a collision course. Gray announced the prediction in April, providing about 3.5 months for observation planning. Details appear on his Project Pluto website. Tracking began shortly after launch, simplifying identification. Experts view the event as a rare controlled opportunity to study artificial impacts, given known mass, speed, and size. The prior comparable case was NASA’s 2009 LCROSS mission, which confirmed lunar water ice. Impact speed is estimated at 8,700 km per hour. Observations will focus on lunar dust behavior to inform natural impact effects and future lunar habitation. A Johns Hopkins University paper outlines expected outcomes: a brief light flash from vaporized material, an ejecta cloud, and a 20-30 meter crater, possibly double if the stage fragments. The flash occurs on the sunlit side, complicating detection, and Indian observers will miss it due to timing and horizon position. Location uncertainty is roughly 20 km, near the near-side western edge far from major landing zones. No current treaty protects specific lunar sites from debris. Rising lunar activity increases risks of interference, prompting calls for better debris rules through international efforts.
