NASA has invited India to join efforts to construct a permanent facility on the Moon. The proposal goes beyond short visits and aims at creating infrastructure for longer human stays near the lunar South Pole. The plan relies on robotic missions, crewed landings, commercial landers, rovers, power units, communications networks and eventually living modules. Early stages through 2028-29 will test operations in the polar region with robotic craft mapping the surface and checking power and navigation systems. From 2029 to 2032 the focus shifts to initial infrastructure such as pressurised modules and improved life-support equipment. Japan is expected to supply a pressurised rover for extended travel. Longer-term goals include larger habitats, regular supply flights and experiments using local lunar materials. The South Pole offers water ice in shadowed craters and extended sunlight on higher ground, both valuable for life support and fuel. However, the area presents steep slopes, extreme temperatures and abrasive dust that challenge equipment. India’s prior missions, including Chandrayaan-3’s landing, provide relevant experience in surface studies and robotics. Possible contributions could involve instruments, mapping or data analysis, yet no specific roles have been assigned. The invitation allows early discussions, but any concrete participation depends on future negotiations. For NASA the base also serves as preparation for Mars missions and reflects a wider approach that includes commercial partners.
