In 1991 NASA launched jellyfish into orbit during the Space Life Sciences 1 mission aboard space shuttle Columbia. The goal was to study how microgravity influences an organism’s balance system. Aurelia jellyfish polyps traveled in sealed bags of artificial seawater. Scientists triggered their development into the free-swimming ephyra stage while in space. Researchers examined whether tiny gravity-sensing structures inside the jellyfish, similar to those in the human inner ear, would form normally without gravity. The jellyfish grew and developed as expected over the nine-day flight. After returning to Earth, however, many space-raised jellyfish showed swimming difficulties. These included irregular pulsing, muscle spasms, and uncoordinated arm movements. The experiment used simple, fast-growing organisms to test gravity-sensing development without sending more complex animals. Some polyps began development before launch while others started in orbit, allowing comparison of partial Earth and full microgravity conditions. Published NASA studies found that microgravity-exposed jellyfish produced ephyrae successfully, sometimes at slightly higher rates than Earth controls. Their gravity-sensing organs appeared structurally normal, yet many animals displayed movement problems once back under Earth’s gravity. The findings suggested that balance systems may require gravitational input during development to function correctly later. Because human vestibular systems rely on similar principles, the results offered early clues about effects of space development on more complex organisms.
