Lachlan Kennedy, who recently claimed the Australian 100m title, has withdrawn from the 200m race at the national championships. The announcement was made on Sunday morning, just before the competition was scheduled to begin. This withdrawal prevents a much-anticipated rematch with Gout Gout at Sydney Olympic Park, following Kennedy’s victory over the Queensland athlete in their previous encounter at the Maurie Plant Meet last month. After securing the 100m win on Saturday evening, Kennedy expressed uncertainty about participating in the 200m. He indicated that he would assess his physical condition and consult with medical experts before deciding. Athletics Australia confirmed his non-participation ahead of Sunday’s events. The matchup had been expected to be a major highlight of the championships. Kennedy recognized the anticipation from spectators, noting that he preferred not to raise expectations without certainty, but assured that the competition would still be strong regardless of his involvement. At the previous year’s nationals, Kennedy competed in the 200m but was disqualified prior to the final, where Gout claimed his inaugural national title. A back stress fracture sidelined Kennedy from last year’s World Championships, and he has emphasized the importance of allowing adequate recovery time this season. Gout enters the 200m as the leading contender on the championships’ closing day, though windy weather may hinder his attempt to be the first Australian to run under 20 seconds. His best time stands at 20.02 seconds. Sunday’s schedule also includes the 800m finals with Claudia Hollingsworth and Peter Bol, the men’s pole vault featuring Kurtis Marschall, and the women’s high jump contest between Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson.
