Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was detained by Bengal Police on Tuesday in connection with a rape complaint lodged by a medical student. He was taken into custody in Hooghly, questioned, sent for medical checks and produced before the Chinsurah Court. The complaint, filed at Mogra Police Station, alleges that Porel formed a physical relationship on the promise of marriage and includes claims of criminal intimidation and recording of private moments. These claims remain unproven and the investigation continues. The arrest follows a Calcutta High Court directive issued in July ordering police to apprehend Porel and another person while seizing electronic devices. Police had already recovered a pen drive for forensic analysis. The complainant had approached the court citing earlier police inaction and alleged threats to release private images. According to the complaint, contact began in 2023 and family discussions about marriage followed. It further alleges an assault and confinement in Delhi on April 2, 2026, along with denial of food requiring medical care. Porel has denied the accusations and stated he would respond fully after the inquiry. The 23-year-old made his first-class debut for Bengal in 2021-22, earned India A selection and joined Delhi Capitals in 2023. The case now advances to further legal proceedings.
