The Zavaray S. Poonawalla Bangalore Summer Derby, scheduled for July 12, will headline a 17-race carnival at the venue this weekend. L. Shivashankar, chairman and senior steward of the Bangalore Turf Club, accepted the trophy for the event on Thursday and expressed thanks to Mr. Poonawalla for co-sponsoring the main race with the club.
As the country’s richest event with total stakes of ₹5 crore, the race has drawn eight runners. The winning owner receives a purse exceeding ₹2.45 crore plus a trophy worth ₹5 lakh, while the trainer, jockey and breeder each get replicas valued at ₹1 lakh. Mr. Shivashankar noted that Mr. Poonawalla plans to provide ₹5 crore in annual sponsorship.
Additional co-sponsors for the weekend include Coromandel Gromor, S.M. Cama Music and Production Pvt. Ltd., Five Star Shipping Company and Patel and Patel Racing LLP.
