Xavi was appointed Netherlands coach on Wednesday, becoming the first foreign-born manager of the national side in almost 50 years. The former Spain midfielder, who helped defeat the Dutch in the 2010 World Cup final, replaces Ronald Koeman following his exit after the tournament. The 46-year-old had been without a club since leaving Barcelona in 2024 and has agreed terms until the 2030 World Cup. Xavi cited a strong link to Dutch football through his Barcelona background shaped by Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels. He described himself as a product of that style and praised coaches such as Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard for their influence. The last overseas coach for the Netherlands was Ernst Happel in the late 1970s. Xavi highlighted the appeal of Dutch attacking principles based on possession, creativity and conviction, aiming to win while entertaining supporters. Dutch federation director Nigel de Jong noted Xavi’s commitment to dominant, attractive football suited to modern demands and praised his ability to connect with players.
