Indian grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen in round three of Norway Chess in Oslo on Wednesday. The 20-year-old from Chennai secured only his second classical win against the Norwegian after a tense finish. Alireza Firouzja extended his lead with a third straight victory, beating world champion D. Gukesh in the Armageddon tiebreak. Praggnanandhaa moved to second place with 4.5 points behind Firouzja on 7.5. In the women’s section, Divya Deshmukh recorded a third consecutive win by defeating Bibisara Assaubayeva in Armageddon after a drawn classical game. Koneru Humpy suffered another loss to Anna Muzychuk. Thursday’s fourth round features Gukesh against Carlsen and Praggnanandhaa versus Vincent Keymer.
