Sanju Samson’s long-awaited breakthrough performance for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026 concluded dramatically on Saturday. The batsman recaptured the impressive strokeplay that earned him three consecutive fifties during the T20 World Cup 2026. Scoring an unbeaten 115 from 56 deliveries, Samson partnered with Ayush Mhatre, who contributed 59 off 36 balls, to build a 113-run stand for the second wicket. This effort propelled Chennai Super Kings to a strong total of 212 for two. Delhi Capitals faltered in response, largely due to Jamie Overton’s impressive bowling figures of 4 for 18, and were dismissed for 189.
Following his fourth IPL century, Samson spoke with former India coach Ravi Shastri about shedding the burden of recent struggles.
‘It feels fantastic, sir. Thank you. You appear to be my good luck charm before matches, so please attend every one,’ Samson remarked.
Shastri responded, ‘No need for humility.’
‘Absolutely, sir. Truthfully, regardless of your current streak or past successes for the national team, a few poor outings can create significant uncertainty. I focused on returning to core techniques, trusting my abilities, and maintaining my usual approach to scoring. Various ideas surfaced, like whether to attack more aggressively early or adjust my strategy. However, I chose to adhere to proven methods, and fortunately, it worked out perfectly today,’ Samson explained.
This result marked Chennai Super Kings’ initial triumph of the campaign, while Delhi Capitals suffered their second loss in a row.
Samson played a pivotal role in Chennai Super Kings’ successful evening at Chepauk.
Opting to bat first, Samson produced his first major contribution in the team’s colors, forming a vital 113-run partnership with Mhatre over roughly 11 overs. Mhatre demonstrated considerable promise during the alliance.
This was Samson’s fourth century in the IPL overall, his debut one for Chennai Super Kings, and the season’s opening ton.
A substantial innings from Samson was crucial for both his confidence and the team’s morale, reassuring supporters at the home venue. He delivered exactly that with an outstanding display before the local crowd.
The knock embodied Samson’s signature style. The player from Kerala had appeared tentative in prior games this year regarding footwork and field awareness, but here he reverted to his reliable form.
