U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday backed FIFA leader Gianni Infantino, who faces allegations of a workplace affair and criticism over a private investment plan. In a social media post, Trump stated that FIFA would make a serious error by considering any replacement for Infantino, whom he described as highly effective. He credited the president with overseeing the most successful World Cup in history. Trump warned that removing him would reduce future success and revenue. His support differs from the stance of U.S. Soccer, which joined Canadian and regional bodies in criticizing the FIFA chief. Infantino, facing reelection next March, has rejected claims of misconduct. FIFA has defended him, describing the criticism as an effort to weaken the organization. The African and South American confederations have also expressed support for Infantino.
