Diego Maradona displayed warning signs that were not addressed during his home care before his death in 2020, a witness told the trial reviewing the Argentine football icon’s passing on Tuesday. Seven medical staff members have faced charges since mid-April in Argentina over possible negligence linked to his death. The World Cup winner died from heart failure and sudden lung fluid buildup two weeks after surgery. Forensic doctor Carlos Cassinelli noted signs such as leg swelling, finger puffiness, breathing difficulty, high blood pressure and rapid heartbeat. He stated no one investigated the swelling despite its serious risk, telling the San Isidro court that these indicators were ignored and home care was unsuitable. The player’s health declined steadily after leaving the hospital, and he endured roughly 12 hours of distress before dying. The defendants reject blame, attributing the death to natural causes given his history of substance issues. The proceedings may extend past August.
