EU officials have accused Meta Platforms’ Instagram and Facebook of violating technology regulations. They say the platforms use features meant to prolong user engagement and have ordered changes to autoplay and infinite scroll functions, warning of possible penalties.
The European Commission issued its initial conclusions after a two-year probe under the Digital Services Act. The law obliges major digital platforms to address illegal and harmful material more effectively.
Platforms worldwide now encounter increased examination amid worries that they worsen youth mental health issues, leading some authorities to enact or review restrictions on minors.
