European Union officials presented a broad strategy Wednesday to lessen dependence on American technology. They regard this reliance as a risk to the region’s economic outlook and security amid strained ties with the Trump administration.
The plan calls for greater official support to speed up data center construction and rebuild the semiconductor sector. It would encourage European governments and companies to source technology locally and could exclude U.S. firms from sensitive cloud computing contracts.
Leaders have grown concerned over dependence in fields such as artificial intelligence, cloud services and semiconductors. They fear this creates a potential “kill switch” that U.S. authorities could activate to restrict access to vital technology.
