Meta is facing widespread criticism after introducing a feature that allows users to convert publicly available photos and other media into AI-generated content without consent. Muse Image, released on July 7, is the first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs and is accessible through Meta AI. The tool enables users to reference or mention a public Instagram account in the Meta AI app to incorporate other users’ profiles and media into new images. Meta stated in a blog post that tagging a username permits Meta AI to use public photos for creating shareable visuals, such as event invitations or personalized graphics, with users able to disable the feature via settings. SAG-AFTRA, the Hollywood union, criticized the move on X and advised members and others to revoke permissions, highlighting risks of unauthorized image use. Concerns have grown following similar issues on X, where Grok AI was used to alter profile photos. To disable the option, users can access Instagram settings, navigate to the ‘Sharing and reuse’ section, and adjust controls for AI content creation. The change may not appear for all accounts immediately.
