The CEO of OpenAI has issued a letter of apology for the company’s failure to inform authorities about a user’s concerning online actions before a deadly shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, which claimed eight lives. In the letter shared on Friday, Sam Altman offered profound sympathies to the affected community. ‘I deeply regret that we did not report the banned account to authorities in June,’ Altman stated. ‘Although words cannot fully address the situation, an apology is essential to acknowledge the profound pain and permanent loss experienced by your community.’ The letter, written on Thursday, was posted on social media by B.C. Premier David Eby and on the Tumbler Ridge Lines news site. On February 10, authorities reported that an 18-year-old suspect, Jesse Van Rootselaar, fatally shot her 39-year-old mother, Jennifer Jacobs, and 11-year-old stepbrother, Emmett Jacobs, at their home in northern British Columbia. She then proceeded to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she killed five students and a teacher before taking her own life. The incident also left 25 people wounded. Following the event, OpenAI revealed that in June, its monitoring systems had flagged Van Rootselaar’s account for promoting violent actions. The San Francisco-based firm evaluated whether to notify the Royal Canadian Mounted Police but concluded the behavior did not warrant escalation. Consequently, OpenAI suspended the account for breaching its guidelines. At the time, Premier Eby suggested that OpenAI might have had a chance to avert the tragedy. In his letter, Altman mentioned discussions with Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka and Eby, who shared the community’s feelings of outrage, sorrow, and worry. They decided a public apology was appropriate, allowing time for mourning. ‘I extend my sincerest condolences to everyone impacted,’ Altman wrote. ‘No one should face such a horrific event. Losing a child is unimaginable.’ He added that his thoughts are with those affected. Altman pledged to collaborate on measures to avoid future incidents. ‘In the future, we will prioritize partnerships with governments at all levels to prevent recurrences,’ he said. In response, Eby posted on social media that the apology was required but fell far short of addressing the immense harm to Tumbler Ridge families.
