The upcoming role-playing game Fable, developed by Playground Games, might face a postponement. Originally set for an autumn 2026 debut, it could shift to a later date within the same year. Sources suggest Microsoft aims to prevent overlap with the launch of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for November 19.
This detail emerged from journalist Jeff Grubb during a recent Game Mess Mornings podcast episode. Grubb stated that Microsoft’s leadership is contemplating the adjustment while keeping the release in 2026. The goal is to create separation from the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 rollout.
Grubb noted, ‘We know Grand Theft Auto 6 is arriving later this year, prompting companies to reassess their game launch strategies.’
He further mentioned hearing from insiders that Microsoft is internally shifting Fable to a later point in the year.
‘It’s not moving beyond this year; it’s still planned for release then. But they’re adjusting it to avoid competing directly with Grand Theft Auto,’ he explained.
A delay from the autumn 2026 window might position Fable in December, following Grand Theft Auto 6, assuming Microsoft avoids extending into 2027.
Rockstar Games finalized the November 19 date for GTA 6 after two prior postponements. This major event has led other studios to reevaluate their late-2026 schedules.
Earlier this year, Playground Games showcased an in-depth look at Fable’s mechanics during the Xbox Developer Direct. The title unfolds in the imaginary land of Albion, featuring an expansive open world with varied environments. Developers describe it as a fully open experience, enabling unrestricted exploration from the start.
Playground Games is also preparing to release Forza Horizon 6 on PC and Xbox Series S/X on May 19. Recently, they unveiled the complete map for this racing game, incorporating notable Japanese sites.
Fable lacks a precise launch date, which might be announced at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.
The action-oriented RPG will be available on PC through Steam and the Xbox app, as well as on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, in autumn 2026. It will join Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from day one.
