Apple appears poised to enhance its iPhone camera capabilities significantly. According to a recent leak, the company is exploring a high-resolution sensor for upcoming models, moving toward greater megapixel numbers. While specifics remain limited, this development follows patterns established by various Android producers in recent times. Companies such as Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi have incorporated high-resolution sensors into their premium devices.
Reports indicate Apple is assessing a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. A tipster known as Digital Chat Station shared this on Weibo, noting that the firm is experimenting with such advanced cameras for future releases. However, this feature is not expected in the iPhone 18 this year or the iPhone 19 lineup in 2027.
In comments, the tipster suggested the initial iPhone with this 200-megapixel telephoto might debut in 2028. This would represent a substantial improvement from the 48-megapixel sensors in the iPhone 17 Pro variants.
Several Chinese manufacturers, including Honor, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, have integrated 200-megapixel telephoto cameras into their top-tier phones recently.
Vivo’s X series includes devices with 200-megapixel telephoto capabilities. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and Galaxy S26 Ultra also feature comparable high-resolution telephoto units. Similar sensors appear in models like the Oppo Find X9 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Ultra.
Earlier rumors pointed to Apple potentially introducing a 200-megapixel camera in an iPhone by 2027 or 2028.
The current top model, iPhone 17 Pro Max, includes a triple rear camera array with a 48-megapixel primary sensor featuring optical image stabilization, a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a 48-megapixel telephoto with up to 8x optical zoom and 40x digital zoom. Speculation suggests the iPhone 18 Pro Max will maintain this configuration.
Rumors indicate the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will include a 24-megapixel front-facing camera, an improvement from the 18-megapixel version in the iPhone 17 series.
