A US government order to suspend access to Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models has prompted Indian technology executives, investors and developers to call for greater artificial intelligence self-reliance. They described the action as a turning point for access to key AI systems. Zoho Corp founder Sridhar Vembu said the event highlighted technology’s role in national strength, adding that sovereignty and security now depend on it and that India must develop its own path. He recommended focusing on smaller open-source models and expanding local research despite limits on high-end chips and funding. Aarin Capital chairman Mohandas Pai proposed a national AI initiative with an annual fund of 50,000 crore rupees for deep tech. 3one4 Capital founding partner Siddarth Pai urged investment in semiconductor design and open-source models. Lightspeed partner Hemant Mohapatra noted that sovereign AI efforts are emerging and may require security clearances similar to defense projects. Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma called the move understandable yet questioned alternatives such as open-source progress. Investor Sandeep Mall warned of sudden dependence risks and advocated building foundational models domestically. Product leader Malay Krishna described advanced AI as a controlled export and cautioned against reliance on foreign systems. Entrepreneur Alex Finn stressed the value of local models. Commentators Matthew Berman and Theo Browne noted the impact on users, while analyst Dylan Patel suggested possible effects on future model releases by US companies.
