Aadit Palicha, cofounder and CEO of Zepto, a quick-commerce company preparing for an IPO, stated that his firm could emerge as India’s equivalent to Amazon in the coming four to five years. He shared these ambitions during a session at the Y Combinator Startup School in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Palicha outlined the goal of establishing Zepto as the leading grocery delivery service in India. He noted that achieving this would position the company as a domestic counterpart to Amazon. In conversation with Y Combinator general partner Jared Friedman, who collaborated with Zepto during its early participation in the accelerator, Palicha reflected on the founders’ initial inexperience.
He described their naivety as beneficial, allowing them to approach challenges with fundamental principles without being deterred by potential pitfalls. Palicha highlighted how Y Combinator encouraged the team to focus on satisfying their first 30 local customers, creating a direct connection that fostered improvement.
Without technology, Palicha explained, Zepto would simply be a standard grocery retailer. He emphasized the importance of streamlined logistics, operations, and supply chain management, which enable cost savings that directly benefit consumers.
Zepto is currently in discussions with institutional investors as part of preparations for a public listing expected in June or July. According to reports from April 14, the company has submitted confidential draft documents for an IPO valued at Rs 11,000-12,000 crore, primarily through new shares. Final details on size and pricing are pending approval from India’s securities regulator, Sebi.
This marks Y Combinator’s inaugural Startup School in India, featuring partners Jared Friedman, Ankit Gupta, and Jon Xu. Notable speakers include Vidit Aatrey of Meesho, Harshil Mathur of Razorpay, Lalit Keshre of Groww, and Mukund Jha of Emergent, all graduates of Y Combinator. Since its founding, the accelerator has supported thousands of startups worldwide, such as Airbnb, Coinbase, Reddit, Stripe, and Twitch.
