A shift in Hungary’s leadership might release €90 billion in funding for Ukraine and accelerate its path toward European Union membership, according to the EU’s enlargement commissioner. Marta Kos, speaking at the IMF and World Bank spring gatherings, called the recent Hungarian vote—where nationalist leader Viktor Orban lost power—a significant victory for the continent. She anticipates this development will positively influence Ukraine’s integration efforts. Kos also noted it could resolve a blockage on a vital loan to support Ukraine’s finances. Orban had blocked the funds amid a disagreement involving a compromised pipeline for Russian oil, frustrating other EU figures. On Wednesday, the UK plans to reveal additional assistance valued at millions of pounds for Ukraine during discussions among top officials and global partners. In Washington, Finance Minister Rachel Reeves is set to authorize a £752 million installment to Kyiv before meeting Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. This portion of a £3.36 billion loan aims to fund military equipment such as extended-range missiles, anti-aircraft defenses, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in an interview with a German media outlet that American mediators lack focus on Ukraine due to the conflict in Iran, and he expressed concern over delays in U.S. weapon supplies. Zelenskyy described Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, involved in negotiations with Russia to halt the invasion, as practical figures currently engaged in discussions with Iran. He added they seek greater leverage with Putin to conclude the conflict, but warned that without firm U.S. pressure on Russia and mere mild conversations, Moscow would lose its caution. Norway and Ukraine have agreed to enhance their joint defense initiatives, including manufacturing Ukrainian drones in the Scandinavian nation, as announced by Norwegian authorities. The pact involves Norway aiding drone production in Ukraine, with Ukraine providing data and expertise in return. Drones from Ukraine will also be assembled in Norway. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, at a shared news event with Zelenskyy, emphasized the value of drawing lessons from Ukraine’s resistance to Russian aggression. U.S. authorities on Tuesday extended a waiver on penalties for Russian oil firm Lukoil’s operations at fuel outlets beyond Russia, as the current administration works to prevent surges in oil costs. The Treasury’s foreign assets control office stated this allows Lukoil-affiliated stations in places like the U.S. to operate normally until October 29, covering routine activities such as supply purchases, insurance, and staff compensation.
