Donald Trump called on Russia to reach an agreement with Ukraine as G7 leaders gathered on Tuesday to refocus attention on the war. European officials sought to engage the US president on Ukraine while his priorities centered on tensions involving Iran. In Évian-les-Bains, the start of a Ukraine session was delayed, leaving UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer waiting with Canadian and Japanese counterparts. The G7 later issued a joint statement affirming firm backing for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The text welcomed Ukraine’s recent battlefield gains and pledged more air defense systems, interceptors and long-range weapons, along with steps to boost Ukrainian arms production. It also noted plans to tighten sanctions on Russia’s energy sector. Discussions continued on economic growth and artificial intelligence. French President Emmanuel Macron was scheduled to host Trump at Versailles to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte was also due to speak ahead of alliance defense talks.
