Donald Trump has endorsed a joint G7 statement that welcomes his agreement with Iran while calling for follow-up negotiations to address Tehran’s ballistic missile program. The original memorandum, set for signing on Friday, does not cover missiles. The statement recommends including additional regional and international parties, such as the IAEA, in future discussions. Trump faces domestic criticism for a conflict with Iran that concluded with a deal falling short of initial goals. He is scheduled to attend a Versailles banquet marking 250 years since American independence. Ahead of the event he described the palace as authentic rather than merely ornate. Iran is expected to reject proposals for wider European involvement in missile and proxy talks, having dealt solely with the United States. Tehran may also dismiss plans by France and Britain for a Hormuz escort task force that the G7 endorsed. On Ukraine, G7 members praised battlefield gains and urged tighter sanctions plus more arms for Kyiv. The Évian meeting, chaired by Emmanuel Macron, includes the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Canada and Japan. The statement indicates Trump accommodated other leaders’ concerns on Iran and Ukraine more than usual. Leaders described the timing as right for further steps after Trump’s deal reopening the strait. The accord lifts some US sanctions on Iranian oil and related sectors and creates a reconstruction fund without US financial input. It postpones decisions on Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, which Trump said could be diluted under IAEA oversight inside Iran. The G7 called the agreement an historic chance to block Iranian nuclear weapons and manage regional threats. They backed a French-British maritime initiative to protect shipping in the strait, stressing it would be defensive and require Iranian consent. Up to 40 nations may join. Trump questioned the need for escorts, saying most mines are already found. The statement urged a comprehensive follow-on accord beyond the current memorandum. Europe has been sidelined from US-Iran talks, with some observers noting limited US expertise compared with Iran’s team. Leaked drafts omit missiles and proxy support. The G7 also called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and supported disarming Hezbollah while preserving Lebanese sovereignty. For Ukraine, members agreed to increase air-defense deliveries and long-range systems.
