Volodymyr Zelenskyy has released an open letter to Vladimir Putin calling for a face-to-face meeting to conclude the war in Ukraine. The letter outlines his perspective on the four-year conflict and notes that while Ukrainian resolve continues, many Russians appear tired of the ongoing effects and seek peace. Zelenskyy has seldom spoken directly to Putin but has often requested a meeting, describing it as essential for any territorial agreement. Putin has rejected such talks, labeling Zelenskyy illegitimate and stating he would only meet to finalize a prior deal. The full letter, posted on the Ukrainian president’s website, has also been shared with other nations including the United States. In the letter dated 4 June 2026, Zelenskyy recalls that many Ukrainians held positive views of Putin when he first took power over 26 years ago. He contrasts that with current attitudes, highlighting recent Ukrainian drone strikes on a forum in St Petersburg. Zelenskyy states that relations have shifted from trade discussions to exchanges focused on strikes and casualties. He describes the war as Putin’s personal decision without genuine cause and predicts history will record it that way. The letter notes that Russians are increasingly uncomfortable with fuel shortages, rising prices, restrictions, and the prospect of further mobilization. Zelenskyy reports that Russian losses in May again exceeded 30,000 killed or wounded, with 63 percent fatalities. He emphasizes that Ukraine does not want endless war and believes most Russians would welcome its end. The letter concludes by urging Putin to choose the path out of the conflict, asserting that Ukraine has maintained and will maintain its independence.
