Ukrainian officials are examining potential reasons for a mass shooting and hostage situation in Kyiv on Saturday, which the SBU security agency classified as a terrorist incident. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that evening that investigators are scrutinizing all details about the assailant and his intentions to ensure accuracy. The 58-year-old perpetrator fired at pedestrians before entering a supermarket, where he held people captive. Law enforcement secured the Holosiivskyi neighborhood and attempted negotiations, but he did not comply and was fatally shot after a 40-minute confrontation. Reports from local outlets identified the man as Dmytro Vasylchenkov, a Ukrainian national born in Moscow, who had resided in Ryazan, Russia, and later in Bakhmut, Donetsk region. Zelenskyy noted the individual had a prior criminal history. Among the injured was a 12-year-old boy whose parents died in the attack, according to Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko. Such events are uncommon in Ukraine, where urban areas frequently endure Russian missile strikes. A resident named Hanna described the suspect as a reclusive neighbor who avoided interactions, offering only brief greetings before moving on. Another local, 45-year-old Lesia Rybzha, expressed disbelief at the violence, questioning why street killings occur alongside aerial bombardments from Russia. Separately, a Russian strike in northern Ukraine on Sunday resulted in the death of a 16-year-old boy and injuries to four others, as reported by Chernigiv’s military administration head Dmytro Bryzhynsky. The attack affected homes, administrative structures, and schools. In Russia, the Kremlin faces backlash from a popular blogger’s critique of officials, coinciding with President Vladimir Putin’s approval ratings dropping for six straight weeks. Victoria Bonya, known from a reality TV program similar to Big Brother, shared an 18-minute Instagram video viewed 26 million times, highlighting public fears and issues without directly addressing Putin or the Ukraine conflict. Observers suggest this might be a strategic move to acknowledge citizen concerns ahead of upcoming elections.
