Initial reports from local officials indicate that at least 17 individuals lost their lives in an explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday.

The incident occurred at a site near Kattanarpatti village. Multiple people sustained injuries and were transported to local medical centers for care.

Rescue teams are combing through the wreckage, as there are fears that more employees might be buried under the collapsed structure.

The reason for the blast remains unclear, and authorities have launched an inquiry.

Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, MK Stalin, expressed sympathies to the families of the victims. He instructed Ministers KKSSR Ramachandran and Thangam Thennarasu to proceed to the location promptly.

In a message on X, Stalin stated that the loss of lives in the Virudhunagar district incident was deeply distressing. He extended condolences and directed the ministers to oversee rescue efforts and support the bereaved families. Additionally, he reached out to the district collector to ensure all required aid is provided.
