Apple has selected veteran executive John Ternus to become its next chief executive, replacing Tim Cook, who will move to the role of executive chairman on the company’s board later this year. Ternus will assume the position on September 1. As a key figure in hardware engineering, Ternus represents continuity in the strategies that have driven unprecedented financial success during Cook’s tenure. The company now generates annual profits exceeding $100 billion, with recent quarterly results showing peak iPhone sales fueled by stronger demand in China. In a statement from the firm, Ternus expressed deep appreciation for the chance to advance Apple’s goals. He noted his extensive time at the company, including collaborations with Steve Jobs and guidance from Tim Cook, and highlighted his role in developing innovations that have transformed daily interactions and global connectivity. Cook will continue as CEO until the end of summer to facilitate a smooth handover. He commended Ternus for combining engineering expertise with innovative spirit and principled leadership. Ternus joined Apple in 2001, advanced to vice president of hardware engineering in 2013, and took charge of the division in 2021, overseeing the design of device components. Key accomplishments under his watch include the creation and rollout of Apple’s custom processors for Mac computers, which boosted sales after replacing Intel components in 2020, according to reports. He also led the introduction of the Apple Watch, AirPods series, and Vision Pro headset; the first two became significant revenue sources, while the latter has yet to achieve similar success. Publications have portrayed Ternus as a friendly mechanical engineer whose approach mirrors Cook’s steady demeanor rather than Jobs’ dynamic but unpredictable style. Johny Srouji, formerly senior vice president of hardware, will succeed him in that role. Cook, who started at Apple in 1998 and became CEO in 2011 following Jobs, has been preparing for this change for months, as reported by media outlets, after indicating a desire to reduce his workload. Ternus emerged as a leading candidate for the position. Born in California, Ternus earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997, where he competed on the swimming team and secured multiple victories. Post-graduation, he spent a short period at a virtual reality firm before joining Apple. While Ternus is expected to maintain the profitable path set by Cook, he will need to address challenges in artificial intelligence, where Apple trails competitors despite its dominance in consumer devices. This includes upgrading the Siri assistant and developing prominent AI features for users.
