As campaigning intensifies for the West Bengal assembly elections, Kolkata Police used baton charges against BJP candidate Rakesh Singh, his daughter, and other supporters during a rally. The event occurred near Ekbalpore Police Station amid rising political friction ahead of the state’s polls.

The BJP group, led by Singh, was protesting outside the station, alleging bias in local administration. Police intervened with batons to break up the gathering, resulting in one serious injury and multiple minor ones. This incident highlights ongoing disputes over law enforcement practices under the TMC-led government.

The clash began on Hossain Shah Road during a BJP event, escalating into confrontations with TMC supporters involving opposing chants. Five BJP members were arrested. Singh, running for the Kolkata Port seat against Firhad Hakim, was at the forefront of the demonstration demanding action on alleged police inaction.

The baton charge was employed to scatter the crowd as conflicts arose between BJP and TMC groups. West Bengal’s political climate remains charged, with voting set for April 23 and 29, and results due on May 4.
