For many years, experts have considered dementia a gradual condition influenced by genetic factors and personal habits. Yet a new study in PLOS Medicine indicates that external factors, like serious bladder infections or dental issues, might hasten cognitive deterioration. In particular, severe urinary tract infections and untreated tooth problems could lead to a dementia diagnosis within several years. Examining this from perspectives of biology, progression timing, and healthcare support highlights why addressing dental care or promptly treating a UTI may play a crucial role in protecting brain function.
