Ross Lyon’s media sessions often blend sharp wit, defensiveness, modesty, light humor, and thoughtful analysis. He might deliver a detailed breakdown of a match’s outcome, engage in playful exchanges, or regard a reporter with evident skepticism. The St Kilda head coach faced backlash for his handling of standard inquiries following a narrow defeat in Adelaide. One question asked about the team’s seasonal position. His reply combined condescension, humor, and evasion, though it stayed within bounds. The reporter managed the interaction effectively. However, the club’s president, Andrew Bassat, added to the discussion unhelpfully. Speaking to the ABC, Bassat noted the difficulties coaches face after close losses and suggested Lyon responds better to thoughtful queries. He summarized Lyon’s perspective as ‘ask foolish questions, receive foolish responses.’ This defense seemed ironic from the Seek founder, given Lyon’s frequent emphasis on football’s ruthless nature. Earlier this year, Lyon described it as Australia’s most unforgiving industry, a claim that might amuse workers in fields like healthcare, education, or hospitality. Calling for more considerate questioning appeared inconsistent. Bassat’s comments highlighted Lyon’s influential role at the club, where he oversees long-term strategy, communications, and key hires—authority rare in contemporary football. Mainstream media often portray him favorably, amplifying his quips on panel discussions featuring his ex-players and associates. Yet, Lyon and his supporters should avoid fostering an image of invulnerability. Recent episodes suggest he has overstepped. Last year, during a press event, he adopted a dismissive tone toward AFL journalist Gemma Bastiani that differed from his interactions with male reporters, implying intellectual superiority. She remained composed and outperformed him in the exchange. Another instance last month involved Lyon stating: ‘If you seek normalcy, join us on the field or behind the microphone and embrace average results.’ Reporters at Moorabbin posed legitimate questions echoed in broadcasts, podcasts, and casual discussions. Lyon’s prickly, aggressive reaction seemed overly sensitive. Lyon’s tough outlook contributes valuably to football discourse, providing a raw perspective on the sport’s competitive intensity. It contrasts with the polished, promotional statements from other coaches. Recognizing the underlying intensity in the profession is beneficial. Lyon argues, reasonably, that commentary on St Kilda often lacks depth and relies on stereotypes. His media appearances serve to delay scrutiny, shield his squad, and spark debates. This approach has succeeded for three years, generating amusement, alertness, and attention for the club. However, much of it involves criticizing those in less powerful positions. While ‘ask foolish questions, receive foolish responses’ may reflect his stance, with the team stuck in mid-table obscurity, this attitude is losing its appeal.
