Carlton coach Michael Voss, facing scrutiny, has supported his team and criticized media coverage as resembling bullying amid questions about permitting player Elijah Hollands to participate in a recent game while experiencing mental health difficulties. Hollands displayed unusual behavior during the contest against Collingwood and is currently receiving hospital treatment. Attention has centered on why the coaching staff allowed the young athlete to compete, as his issues appeared evident to observers.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday at Princes Park before the upcoming game against Fremantle, Voss emphasized respecting the AFL’s review of the club’s decisions that evening, acknowledging the need to examine procedures. However, in this intricate scenario with prior context, he commended his staff’s efforts. ‘I’m proud of our team, and the review will handle itself, so we should back it,’ he stated. ‘Regrettably, instead of keeping this a personal matter, it has become a public spectacle. The discussions and detailed breakdowns have, in some respects – to be frank – approached bullying.’

When pressed on who faced the bullying, Voss specified, ‘Our staff are being targeted, and the media pushes for results. I simply urge considering those affected, as this touches families.’ He noted that media opinions have rushed to judgments. ‘Instead of offering understanding and kindness in a tough circumstance, there is harsh criticism based on limited information, ignoring past details, leading to premature conclusions.’

Voss described Hollands’ earlier public discussion of his challenges two years ago as a key event, noting the subsequent period has been challenging for both the player and the club. The coach mentioned he has not directly contacted Hollands lately but has communicated with his relatives. Voss stressed the club’s dedication to protecting the player’s confidentiality. ‘You can provide your analysis, as that’s your role,’ he said. ‘Our responsibility is to safeguard the player’s privacy, and if that draws criticism toward me or requires us to absorb some backlash, we’ll accept it.

‘Everyone has been affected somehow, whether as families or individuals – perhaps some here have dealt with mental health issues recently, or it involved a relative, friend, or partner. All I request is … what would you desire in that position? That’s our only plea.’
