Ex-Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh believes that Mumbai Indians, winners of five IPL titles, have not yet hit their stride in the current IPL 2026 season. He suggests they must address their errors to return to victory. Following a heavy 103-run defeat to Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday—their largest margin of loss in T20 cricket history—Mumbai Indians sit low on the standings.
“Mumbai Indians form a powerful squad, but they lack consistency and are enduring a string of defeats. Some errors have occurred, and the spin bowlers have underperformed,” Harbhajan stated in an interview.
The ex-Mumbai Indians player also called on the rest of the team to improve their efforts to ease the load on Jasprit Bumrah, who faces immense pressure.
“Jasprit Bumrah shoulders great responsibility and a substantial role. Teammates must rise to the occasion and deliver stronger showings. Mumbai Indians are the type of team that, after securing a few wins, becomes hard to halt. They need to discover the proper strategy to resume succeeding,” he continued.
Even with a weak beginning to the tournament, Harbhajan remains optimistic that Mumbai Indians could advance to the playoffs by stringing together victories.
These remarks follow Mumbai Indians’ record defeat to Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Chennai Super Kings chose to bat and amassed 207 for 6, driven by Sanju Samson’s unbeaten century of 101, supported by efforts from other batters to surpass 200.
Mumbai Indians faltered early in their chase and were dismissed for 104 in 19 overs. Akeal Hosein claimed four wickets, with Noor Ahmad offering key assistance.
This setback dropped Mumbai Indians to eighth place, holding four points after seven games. Their next match is against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 29 at the same ground, a critical contest they must win.
